Des Moines, IA
It
was a great week in Des Moines, Iowa as the Wings had seven athletes qualify
& compete in the AAU National Track & Field Jr Olympics of 2014.
Emma Taggart started the week earning the first medal for the program
during her competition in the Pentathlon, later in the week she also took home
5th in the open High Jump event. Laila Campbell had a big time Long Jump
performance that put her into the final group of competition and she finished
the day with 6th place (which was huge as she entered the event ranked only
about 40th). The High School sensation, Danika Ani proved that she's not
only one of the best shot put throwers in the Maryland region with a 4th place
finish nationally. Last but certainly not least, speedster, Chris
Campbell got busy on the track while the girls did damage on the field events
and he showed that he's truly one of the fastest in the nation. During
the qualifying rounds he clocked the fastest times of the week in the 100M
& 200M events and in the finals he finished the busy week of competition
with two 3rd place finishes. All of the athletes are to be commended as
they put in a lot of work throughout the year in preparation to compete against
the best athletes in the country. This was a very proud week for the
program as the program is really just getting started. In two years of
existence the Wings had a number of great accomplishments including multiple
athletes advancing each year to the Jr Olympics, (4) medalist, and (6) medals.
We look forward to building off of this success for 2015 and adding more
athletes as we continue to maintain focus on accomplishing goals of being the
best we can be in all we do. We also thank all of the athletes that
participate, all of the parents, and supporters as it truly takes a lot of people
to run a program that impacts all levels of athletes while getting the results
that we're realizing.
